The Line Between Interests and Profession.
Where does the line get drawn between interest and profession with architects and interior designers? Does it even get drawn or is it more of a blurred, fuzzy partition? Obviously there needs to be an interest in what you are doing when in these professions, you wouldn’t be doing it otherwise. But, how does one separate this? Is it just a ‘switch off’ from clients and then it becomes the interest? Is it a never ending cycle of thinking and rethinking? Maybe because it’s such a spatial oriented profession that we can never really leave it no matter where we are.
We might see something that’s cool and inspiring while out at lunch or dinner with friends or family. We might observe certain spaces that inspire us in some way and then there are other spaces which make us feel not so welcome or a little awkward, maybe even uneasy. So, perhaps it never really is so clearly defined by interest and profession. Most creatives will understand this and not just architects and interior designers. Perhaps it’s in the observations and exploration when we are in ‘interest’ mode that particularly sparks an idea, a concept or a solution to the ‘professional’ mode.
‘Everyone’s perception of things is different and can, or will, create a different outcome and a different feel.’
Every individual professional in these industries are different, each has their own personality and observing from their own eyes and minds. Everyone’s perception of things is different and can, or will, create a different outcome and a different feel. That’s the magic of individuals coming together in collaboration, to create the overall outcome of such spaces and experiences. It feels like a never ending loop, and maybe it never will end. There are endless possibilities out there ready to be explored and drawn into the visible world, from the ether through the mind in combination with what others have created before us.
For those in these professions or in creative industries as a whole, how do you see your interests and profession? Is it a separate thing for you, or a blurred thing like many others?
Be observant. Stay curious. Keep creating.
